Founding Partners
The Arab Network for Literacy and Adult Education was established on May 25, 1999, under the invitation and patronage of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO). Its creation reflected the principle of promoting the role of civil society efforts in literacy and adult education, as outlined in the Arab Literacy Strategy issued in 1976, and represented the culmination of ALECSO’s ongoing initiatives in this field. It also responded to the recommendations of the Fifth International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA V), held in Hamburg in 1997.
The Network was founded at the Workers’ University in Cairo, generously hosted by the Arab Republic of Egypt. Its founding meeting brought together 56 non-governmental organizations, Arab associations, and government institutions representing 15 Arab countries.
Since its establishment in 1968, the Arab Network for Popular Education / Ecumenical Popular Education Program has worked with learners to promote quality education for human and sustainable development, while advancing democracy, human rights, and poverty reduction.
Its mission is to renew education and learning in the Arab world as a participatory, modern, and transformative process that, through training and continuous support, enables the acquisition of knowledge that responds to local community needs and values the experiences and knowledge of marginalized individuals and communities, ultimately contributing to improved living conditions.
The Arab Network for Popular Education / Ecumenical Popular Education Program also trains social actors working with civil society organizations involved in adult education, literacy, and adult literacy initiatives, in coordination with local authorities across several countries.
The Arab Campaign for Education for All (ACEA) is an independent, non-profit coalition composed of networks, alliances, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, teachers’ unions, associations, and other stakeholders concerned with education across the Arab region. ACEA seeks to unify and mobilize civil society efforts to ensure the achievement of Education for All goals.
The Arab Campaign for Education for All (ACEA) is committed to fulfilling its mission with objectivity, transparency, accountability, equality, and adherence to democratic standards in all its plans and procedures. It also upholds the commitments adopted by the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) at its 2001 World Assembly to build an international movement founded on the principles of good governance.
ANHR was established in 2009 as a regional network operating across the Arab region to promote and strengthen the values of citizenship and the culture of human rights, while integrating the principles of gender equality, the rights of persons with disabilities, and the rights of groups most vulnerable to discrimination and exclusion through coordinated efforts and capacity building.
The network brings together 45 organizations from nine Arab countries: Egypt, Lebanon, Algeria, Iraq, Palestine, Jordan, Morocco, Yemen, and Tunisia. It is supported by a Coordinating Committee of 11 members and an Executive Management team that oversees the network’s operations from Amman, Jordan.
